The Wasp Factory - Women and the Sea

My greatest enemies are Women and the Sea. These things I hate. Women because they are weak and stupid and live in the shadow of men and are nothing compared to them, and the Sea because it has always frustrated me, destroying what I have built, washing away what I have left, wiping clean the marks I have made. And I’m not all that sure the Wind is blameless, either.
The Sea is a sort of mythological enemy, and I make what you might call sacrifices to it in my soul, fearing it a little, respecting it as you’re supposed to, but in many ways treating it as an equal. It does things to the world, and so do I; we should both be feared. Women… well, women are a bit too close for comfort as far as I’m concerned. I don’t even like having them on the island, not even Mrs Clamp, who comes every week on a Saturday to clean the house and deliver our supplies. She’s ancient and sexless the way the very old and the very young are, but she’s still been a woman, and I resent that, for my own good reason. –pp.43-44

Don't quite see what Frank's issue is...

  2. hahaha! very funny... but... im wonder.. he's criticizing this Mrs Clamp lady for being 'sexless' which means, that its a bad thing to be sexless, but it also perhaps indicates that it is a good thing to be sexy. and many women are! like your pictures indicate.. so then basically, it leads me to believe that he's not so good looking cause he cant get the sexy good looking smart girls and therefore he's a woman hater. and, if my logic doesnt make sense, then oh well-im "weak and stupid' anyway right?

  3. Thanks for the comments pooj - I would definitely advise you read the novel, because these passages indicating disdain for women become elucidated with the book's culminating revelations. And I wouldn't want to spoil that for you.

Also, I think I may have been a bit missleading with my visual aids since they kind of detract from the actual text, but i just couldn't resist.

Since you're liking the posts, do read the book - i think you'll enjoy it! Although i can imagine it to be at times emotionally quite challenging - you have been warned!

  4. I forgot to mention my main point - oops. It's not about being sexy, it's about having any sex/ gender at all! Being sexless is bad for Frank's own personal reasons, and being a woman is also bad.

But I'm glad you liked the pictures :-)
